Supply of Green Hydrogen to HRS PLN, PLTP Kamojang Becomes the First in Southeast Asia

Jakarta, 22 February 2024 – The Kamojang Geothermal Power Plant (PLTP) has officially become the first geothermal-based green hydrogen producer in Southeast Asia. This green hydrogen plant (GHP) at the new renewable energy (EBT) plant is the 22nd GHP built by PT PLN (Persero) and will supply green hydrogen for the Senayan Hydrogen Refueling Station (HRS) which was inaugurated last Wednesday (21/2). .

Geothermal-based green hydrogen is produced from condensation water from the Kamojang PLTP electricity production process. PLN plans to increase the GHP capacity at the Kamojang PLTP so that hydrogen production will be greater.

PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said, PLN continues to innovate in accelerating the hydrogen ecosystem end to end in Indonesia. Through the presence of GHP, said Darmawan, PLN is also supporting the development of hydrogen vehicles which are known to be economical and low emission.

“We want to try green hydrogen from a new and pure renewable energy production process. "So, we build GHP at PLTP Kamojang, there is an additional around 4.3 tons per year," said Darmawan.

With the operation of GHP at the Kamojang PLTP, PLN currently has 22 GHP spread across Indonesia which can produce 203 tons of green hydrogen per year. Darmawan detailed that of the total production of 203, 75 tons of hydrogen will be used for the plant's operational needs. Meanwhile, 128 tons will be used to support the development of the hydrogen vehicle ecosystem.

According to him, assuming each car covers a distance of 100 km/day, the total green hydrogen production capacity can be used for 438 cars a year and can reduce imported fuel energy by 1.59 million liters per year into domestic energy.

"From the upstream side we can complete it, from the downstream side we are building HRS as a pilot project, later there will also be a hydrogen center here," said Darmawan.

National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) Principal Expert Researcher Eniya Listiani Dewi supports PLN in presenting HRS as an innovation to support green transformation in the transportation sector. Eniya also encourages the green hydrogen ecosystem to continue to be improved in line with the high public demand for environmentally friendly transportation.

“This is a historic moment to achieve a golden Indonesia 2045, which is not only advanced but also clean and sustainable. In the future, there will still be a lot of homework to complete the ecosystem as well as the demand. "We will of course encourage public transportation, such as buses and ships," explained Eniya.
