Optimizing Geothermal Energy, PLN Indonesia Power Proactively Supports the Government in Pursuing the Net Zero Emission Target

Jakarta, 2 June 2024 – PLN Indonesia Power (PLN IP) is committed to supporting the Government proactively in achieving the energy transition, Enhanced National Determined Contribution (NDC) and the Net Zero Emission (NZE) program, by optimizing Geothermal potential in Indonesia.

Main Director of PLN Indonesia Power, Edwin Nugraha Putra, said that PLN Indonesia Power is trying to develop new renewable energy (EBT), including geothermal energy. This clean energy has the potential to continue to be developed. The reason is, Indonesia stores 40% of the world's geothermal reserves.

“Indonesia is a ring of fire country, blessed with large geothermal energy resources. "This potential needs to continue to be developed, used as an environmentally friendly source of electrical energy," said Edwin.

In optimizing geothermal heat, PLN Indonesia Power also collaborates with various parties, including Pertamina Geothermal Energy. This collaboration was marked by the signing of the Joint Development Agreement (JDA) on May 30 2024 in Jakarta.

According to Edwin, the existence of the JDA marks a new stage in the efforts of two large domestic energy companies to optimize the capacity of a number of Geothermal Power Plants (PLTP) in Indonesia.

"The signing of this JDA will stimulate the utilization of geothermal resource potential which can accelerate the national energy transition, achieve the Government's commitment to Enhanced National Determined Contribution (NDC), and the Net Zero Emission target in Indonesia," he said.

This JDA is a follow-up to the signing of the Joint Development Study Agreement (JDSA) by the two corporations on February 22 2024. One of the main focuses of the JDA is the development of co-generation projects in two geothermal working areas by utilizing the energy contained in brine to increase capacity. electricity production.

The initial development targets for PLTP co-generation (binary plants) which are ready to be developed are PLTP Ulubelu Binary Unit and PLTP Lahendong Binary Unit, each of which has the potential to increase installed capacity by 30 MW and 15 MW.

"By utilizing the results of innovation and advanced technology, the utilization of geothermal energy can be increased, so that meeting the country's electricity needs from EBT continues to increase," he added.
